Southern Seminary Junior College student Pamela Makowski was chosen by school administration to participate in the Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester. - The Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors accepted bids for 11 police cars for the county sheriff’s department. The Board also ordered two trucks for the county. -In a survey of new college students throughout the country, “a good academic reputation” was the reason given by most first-year cadets for choosing Virginia Military Institute for their undergrad education.

A Liberty University student was forced to spend the night on an island in the river near Glasgow after his canoe collapsed. He was rescued by helicopter.
- Dr. Jake Burks, superintendent of Rockbridge County Schools, presented a proposed budget to the school board that called for raising salaries by an average 3.5 percent and reducing the number of teaching positions by 4.5. - Mary Lou Richardson, a resident at Heritage Hall, celebrated her 100th birthday. Born in Amherst County, she lived most of her life in New York and later in Buena Vista.
