Community Cleanup Starting Saturday

Since 1995, members of the Rockbridge community have banded together to clean up roadways and dump sites throughout the county. That tradition continues this year when Rockbridge Conservation (formerly RACC), in partnership with Rockbridge County and the Virginia Department of Transportation, sponsors the Rockbridge Community Cleanup starting this Saturday and running through next week.

Groups and individuals are encouraged to sign up online at the Rockbridge Conservation website, rockbridgeconservation.org, by clicking on the “Annual Community Clean Up” link. Bags and vests are available at Rockbridge Regional Library branches and the county recycling collection centers. Volunteers choose the roads/ locations in the Rockbridge area that they wish to clean and can also choose alternate dates and times if needed.

Groups may wish to compete for the Litter Cup, fashioned by Mark Cline, which is awarded to the group collecting the most bags during the event. To claim the cup this year and unseat last year’s winners, groups should be prepared to collect more than 100 bags.

“Many of our roads have an abundance of litter that could allow you to put the Litter Cup on your mantelpiece. Get a group together and join in,” said a spokesperson.

Anyone who knows of particular areas that should be targeted through the Rockbridge Community Cleanup is asked to notify Jamie Goodin at (540) 463-2330 or my email to cleanup@rockbridgeconservation. org.
