Staunton High School student Mac Preston will perform at the Lincoln Center in New York City in April.
Preston, student of John Fregosi, placed first at the English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition Lexington Branch tournament, which was held Feb. 15 at Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton. Preston will join more than 40 other contestants from around the country for the national competition in New York City, where each student will perform a monologue and sonnet before a panel of judges.
Wren Hamner from Harrisonburg High School earned second place, and Addison Short from Spotswood High School was awarded third place in the Lexington Branch competition. Each student performed a Shakespearean monologue of their choice and recited a sonnet.
Judges for the Branch Competition were Christopher Seiler, Joe Mucciolo and Milissia Koncelik.
