Physical education programs, cafeterias and the buttoning of “snowsuits for 25 five-year-olds” were among the subjects discussed at a special budget session of the Rockbridge County School Board. - Virginia Military Institute planned to loan two French cannons from the Revolutionary War period to the Yorktown Victory Center as part of the state’s bicentennial observance.
- Dr. Boyd Clements backed out of a decision to establish a practice in Buena Vista, saying that the city’s medical facilities were too limited.

Hoofbeats Therapeutic Riding Center was preparing for a move to the Virginia Horse Center. The new complex was to be funded in part by a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. - The U.S. Forest Service‘s visitor center at Natural Bridge of Virginia announced that it would be closing for good. -A proposal to create a special service district in downtown Lexington was withdrawn by the Lexington Downtown Development Association. LDDA executive director Don Hasfurther cited a lack of support from downtown property owners as a reason for the withdrawal.
