City Acquiring Linden Ave. Lot
A lot that fronts on Linden Avenue near Ninth Street is being donated to the city of Buena Vista. City Council on Thursday adopted a resolution to accept the donation of the lot that encompasses 6,250 square feet.
Tom Roberts, the city’s director of community development, explained that the city’s policy is not to accept donations of land unless they serve a clear purpose. In this case, Pedlar Gap Run goes straight through the middle of the property so that if any future flood hazard mitigation work needs to be done, the city would have access to the stream.
The assessed value of the property is $800 so the tax revenue loss will be minimal – less than $10 per year. Adjacent property owners were not interested in acquiring this land that is within the floodway.
Tax Exemption Approved
Buena Vista City Council on Thursday approved an ordinance exempting the Rockbridge Area Health Center from real estate taxes on its offices at 2127 Magnolia Ave.
RAHC provides medical services at this location to everyone “regardless of a person’s ability to pay, thereby rendering a valuable and needed service to the citizens of Buena Vista,” states the ordinance. The property is assessed at $83,400, putting the real property tax for the present fiscal year at $759.
Steve Webb made a motion to approve the ordinance that was seconded by Danny Staton and approved on a 6-0 vote.
