Fought-For Freedoms ‘Threatened By Our Own Government’

March 24, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: As a soldier and officer in the U.S. Army, my father risked his life many times as he drove a tank in World War II; saw combat in Korea; and served as a Green Beret in Viet Nam. My father passed away in July 2024 at the age of 98.

I’m so very thankful he didn’t live to witness what is taking place in our country under the Trump administration and Republican- controlled Congress. The daily assault on the rule of law, and the misinformation, threatening rhetoric, and actions targeting those who disagree with the administration are all behaviors of an authoritarian government that seeks to gain absolute control.

My father and so many others fought for the freedoms many take for granted and are currently being threatened by our own government. I choose to honor my father’s service by staying informed and bearing witness. That’s the least I can do to honor his sacrifices. M. PETERSON Lexington
