March 26, 1975

The unemployment rate in the area continued to rise. It was 17.1 percent in February, up from 14.8 percent in January. - Petitions were presented to the Buena Vista School Board asking for the removal of the controversial Responding series of textbooks. One parent said that the series was “the type of literature [that] causes a split between parent and child.” - Officials of Rockbridge County’s Weekday Religious Education were wondering how a ruling by a federal court would affect the program. A U.S. district court judge said in the ruling that a Harrisonburg WRE program was a show of support for a religious group and was therefore unconstitutional.

The Lexington School Board recommended replacing Waddell Elementary School with a new elementary school building and renovating Lylburn Downing Middle School. - Peterbilt of Baltimore/Richmond took out an option to buy a 6.9-acre tract of land near Raphine for a sales and services facility for tractor-trailers. - The Buena Vista School Board voted unanimously to authorize Superintendent Dr. Joseph King to approach the city about taking out a five-year loan to pay for new band uniforms, which had already been ordered and cost $43,000.
