Roosters are crowing in Buena Vista, much to the annoyance of some of their neighbors.
“We’ve been getting an influx of complaints about roosters,” Buena Vista City Manager Jason Tyree told City Council during Thursday’s meeting.
He said the complaints are coming from three different parts of the city – the Enderly Heights neighborhood, Ninth Street and Long Hollow Road.
There is currently no prohibition against having roosters or hens in Buena Vista. Tyree suggested staff and City Council might want to review the city’s laws on keeping livestock. Many cities allow small flocks of hens while prohibiting roosters, he said.
Mayor Tyson Cooper noted there are inconsistencies in the city code concerning the keeping of livestock. For instance, he said he understood that goats are prohibited while cows and horses are permitted.
Council member Steve Webb said the recent rise in the price of eggs might prompt some folks to consider acquiring egg-laying hens but he knows from experience that it’s an expensive proposition and won’t lead to any cost savings.
The consensus of Council appeared to be to take a look at the city’s laws regulating the keeping of livestock.
