Renovations Start On Glasgow Building

Members of Glasgow public works have started renovations to the Masonic Lodge building across from Town Hall.

In January, Town Council had approved the purchase of 1015 Blue Ridge Road building, including five lots. The building is currently used in part by the Masons and they will continue to do so. The other section of the building will be used for town government meetings. The town tentatively hopes to use the open lots for a future flea market.

That was among the reports given at the March meeting of Glasgow Town Council.

Charity Smith with the Rockbridge Community Services Board, and resident of Glasgow, spoke to Council about programs and presentations they can provide, like “Vaping for the Public,” “Damages of Fentanyl,” training for Narcam use, and healthy eating promotions.

Kenny Wilkerson came before Council to voice concern about the ongoing problem of flooding in his neighborhood during heavy rain events. It was addressed by Town Manager Allyson Finchum that the town staff has finally gotten permission to pull brush and debris from the grate that goes under the railroad track toward Mohawk, just enough to allow water flow. That is private property and they can’t get large equipment in there to haul the debris away.

There was also concern expressed about homeless people in town staying at the hikers’ shelter. There is a three-night maximum stay for hikers.

The construction contract for the waterline replacement project was awarded to Wells Construction Co. in Vinton.

The Parks and Recreation committee noted they are planning three music events this summer. The first will be June 28 with Southpaw. Little Marvin and the Martians will be featured on Aug. 2, and Late Night Stumblers will close out the season on Sept. 6.

The Farmers’ Market Spring Vendor Event is planned for Saturday, May 3. The set-up fee is $15, and is open to various vendors – bakers, crafters, artists, Scensy, Tupperware, etc. Several vendors have already signed up. The regular market season will begin the second weekend in May. Some changes are forthcoming to be announced later.

The following appointments to the Planning Commission were approved by Council: reappointment of Deborah Farina for a term of four years; reappointment of Tom Camden and Natalie Harris for two-year terms; and appointment of Jesse Nelson for a term of one year.
