Kelly Scores Five Goals To Lead Wildcats At Home

The Rockbridge County High School boys lacrosse team earned its first win of the season by defeating Christiansburg 19-4 last Wednesday night in Lexington.

Andrew Kelly led the Wildcats (1-2) with five goals and won 77.8 percent (7-of-9) of his faceoffs. Jayden Layman and Pat Looney each scored three goals for RC, and Grayden Brown and Quincy Speers chipped in two goals each. Scoring one goal each for the Wildcats were John Brooke, Parker Flint, Justin Higgins and Price Lunsford. Flint also won 3-of-4 faceoffs. Brooke led RC with five assists, while Brown dished out two assists, and Flint and Speers each had one.

Leading RC with nine ground balls was Brooke, while Kelly had eight ground balls, Layman collected six, and Speers, Aiden Meyers and Avery McDaniel each had five. It was the Wildcats’ first win under first-year RC head coach Davey Jones.

Carter Evans had all four of the goals for the Blue Demons (0-2), scoring three goals in the second quarter.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game and maintained possession for the vast majority of the first quarter, leading 8-0 before Evans scored his first goal just 13.8 seconds before the end of the period.

Brown scored the next three goals in just over three minutes at the start of the second quarter, but the Wildcats responded by scoring six goals to extend their lead to 14-4 by halftime. RC added three goals in the third quarter and one more in the fourth.

Because the Wildcats led by 12 points or more, the teams played with a running clock for most of the second half.

Sharing goalkeeping duties for the Wildcats were Chase Pooley and Ashtin Taylor, each making two saves.

With no games this week, the Wildcats will have extra practice time before returning to action at Franklin County next Thursday, April 10, starting with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity game scheduled to follow at 7:15. They’ll play at Hidden Valley the following Monday, April 14, with the varsity game only at 7:15 p.m.
