Dr. Malcolm Lowell Cothran Jr. planned to practice internal medicine and pediatrics in the area upon leaving the U.S. Army in the fall. He had been introduced to Lexington on a bus trip when he was in high school. - Confirmation was received from Imperial Iranian Navy officials that 30 Iranian midshipmen would arrive in May to enroll at Virginia Military Institute. They were expected to remain at VMI for four years. - The Red Cross’s bloodmobile’s two-day visit to VMI produced a tally of 621 pints, exceeding the quota by 121 pints.

David Cox, former rector of R.E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church, announced his candidacy for the 24th district seat in the House of Delegates, challenging Ben Cline. - Doug Bartlett celebrated 20 years as the head coach for VMI’s lacrosse team. - Gene Holland, owner of the Lexington True Value hardware store, decided to retire and close up shop for good. The store remained open while the inventory was liquidated.
