New Oak To Be Planted During Event
In honor of an iconic tree - and all trees - Boxerwood is hosting a special afternoon at its woodland garden on Saturday, April 12, from 2 to 4.
As part of spring celebrations, the nature center will be offering several relaxed, familyfriendly activities throughout the afternoon honoring Boxerwood’s mighty Great Oak, which uprooted in February after rain and wind. A highlight will be a gathering at the site for story-sharing, art-making, and marveling (the enormous rootball and trunk are still present per Boxerwood’s intention).
At 3 p.m. the assembled will gather by the fallen tree to plant a new oak, with Boxerwood’s garden steward Karen Stanley present throughout the afternoon to answer questions.
“The Great Oak was more than 150 years old,” said Stanley, “and people have shared such sweet stories with us about what the tree meant to them. We’re glad we can offer our community this time to get together to both celebrate the life of a special tree and take the next step.”
As part of the gathering, Boxerwood will be providing wildflower- embedded seed paper for tree lovers of all ages to draw, write, then plant their reflections along with the new oak.
Other afternoon activities include a DIY “Trees of Stature” scavenger hunt, plus an opportunity to pot-up (and take home) a native tree seedling.
There is no charge for the program. The address is 963 Ross Road, with parking in the upper parking lot near the Play Trail, with overflow in the field accessed by Munger Lane. Rain date is Sunday, April 13, 2-4 p.m.
