A veteran-led support group created to meet the unique needs of veterans of military service will begin soon.
Sponsored by Rockbridge Recovery, the group will meet weekly beginning Friday, May 2, at the organization’s meeting center located at 119 E. 28th St., Buena Vista. A meal will be served at each meeting and transportation is available on request.
“In a safe, confidential and relaxed environment, veterans can connect with each other, build a strong support network, and rediscover the sense of camaraderie they experienced during their service,” explained Ashley Jennings, Rockbridge Recovery’s associate director. “A trained veteran will be on hand to facilitate open discussions about both the challenges and achievements veterans face.
“This mutual support is one way veterans can help each other and ‘Leave No Soldier Behind,’” she continued. “We are grateful to the Marshall Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America and Carilion Clinic Community Grants for their support in making this program possible.”
Jennings noted that veterans often struggle with the same issues, whether their service was recent or many years ago. These issues could include PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, reuniting with family post-deployment, transitioning from military to civilian life, substance abuse, gambling, alcoholism, anger management, and other mental health challenges.
To maintain the integrity of the Veterans Support Group, admission will be open to veterans of military service only. Documentation, including a copy of the DD214, a valid Veterans Affairs ID, or a Virginia-issued Real ID with the Veteran certification stamp will be required. If a veteran is unable to provide any of these documents, Jennings will assist them in obtaining a copy of their DD214 through the National Archives.
Prior registration is strongly recommended, but veterans may attend their first meeting without making a reservation. All participants will be required to complete registration forms and provide verification of military service prior to attending a second meeting.
