April 14, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: Gen. Douglas MacArthur and his post-WWII occupation staff, mostly junior grade military officers, drafted the Japanese Constitution, the oldest un-amended constitution in the world. It wasn’t drafted by Marxist professors or DEI-type committees at our Ivy League colleges.
Modeled, generally, after the U.S. Constitution with its allimportant “retained” civil rights, but prohibiting the Japanese government the power to ever wage war, Japan has what amounts to a security guarantee from the United States, likely the only one in the world.
All other security arrangements between the U.S. and the global community are enclosed in treaties, all of which are dissolvable at the option, or whims, of each of the makers.
Ex-President Biden, and apparently his diplomats and associated staff, were unaware of Japan’s constitution and special security status when Biden citied “national security interests” in blocking the sale of U.S. Steel to Nippon Steel. Similarly, the Biden administration stumbled out of Afghanistan without realizing and recognizing either the toll in American lives, or our country’s loss of billions of dollars in technologically advanced military equipment.
So, when was Biden mentally incompetent to handle the job as president? The chronology of events seems to show he was incompetent for most, if not all, of his four years of service There is no better, more trustworthy and reliable friend of the U.S. than Japan. Its constitutional pledge to peace these past 80 years is rock solid.
Nippon Steel should be cleared by the Trump administration to exercise the right to freely negotiate a competitive purchase of U.S. Steel. DON HENKE Goshen
