Schools Like VMI ‘Benefit From Rotating’ Their Leaders

April 3, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: In a recent copy of The News-Gazette, retired Maj. Gen. Cedric T. Wins said the Virginia Military Institute board of visitors’ decision to remove him as superintendent was driven not by performance, but by politics and ideology.

The general seems to forget all the moves he and his family made over his career, usually after three or four years, very rarely no more than that. The reason was always to broaden any commander’s experience in various different commands.

Likewise, military schools like VMI benefit from rotating their command leadership to bring in new and fresher ideas. Such is the case with the board of visitors’ decision to not extend General Wins command at VMI.

The general is more than welcomed and encouraged to seek out assignments at other schools having completed a successful assignment here at VMI. Lexington, Buena Vista and Rockbridge County residents wish him and his family God’s blessing’s for good health, happiness and continued success in the years to come. BRAD PRICE Buena Vista
