April 16, 1975

The star-studded disaster movie “The Towering Inferno” was playing at the State Theatre while “The Four Musketeers” was the feature at the Lyric Cinema. - After correctly spelling “veterinary” and “poultry,” Angie Watkins, a seventh grader at Natural Bridge Elementary School, was declared the winner of the Rockbridge County spelling bee. -An architectural study recommended a complete restoration of the Stonewall Jackson House. Plans were also being made to reconstruct Jackson’s stable and his garden in the rear of the house.

Antonin Scalia, associate justice of the United States Supreme Court, addressed a crowd of roughly 500 at Washington and Lee University’s Lee Chapel.

- Marine Capt. James C. Edge, a 1996 graduate of Virginia Military Institute, was killed during combat operations in Ramadi, Iraq. - Maiah Bartlett, a fifthgrader at Waddell Elementary School, and Jessica Hartbarger, a fifth grader at Central Elementary School, were local winners in the 2005 Arbor Day National Poster Contest.
