Event Slated For March 18-26

Since 1995, the community has banded together to clean up roadways and dump sites throughout the county.

That tradition continues this year when Rockbridge Conservation (RACC), in partnership with Rockbridge County and the Virginia Department of Transportation, sponsors the Rockbridge Community Cleanup Saturday, March 18, through Sunday, March 26.

Groups and individuals are encouraged to sign up on the Rockbridge Conservation website, www.rockbridgeconservation. org/cleanup, by clicking on the green Sign Up button.

Bags and vests will be available at the Lexington and Glasgow library branches and the county recycling collection centers. Volunteers choose the roads and locations in the Rockbridge area that they wish to clean and can also choose alternate dates and times if needed.

Groups are also encouraged to compete in the Litter Cup Challenge. The Litter Cup, fashioned by Mark Cline, is awarded to the group collecting the most bags of trash during the event. To claim the Litter Cup this year and unseat last year’s winners, be prepared to collect more than 100 bags, said a spokesman.

“Many of our roads have an abundance of litter that could allow you to put the Litter Cup on your mantelpiece,” said the spokesman. “Get a group together and join in!”

Anyone who knows of particular areas that should be targeted through the Rockbridge Community Cleanup is asked to notify Rockbridge Conservation at (540) 463-2330 or at [email protected].
