Man Charged With Multiple County Thefts

A Natural Bridge Station man has been taken into custody and charged in connection with several thefts in the northern part of Rockbridge County, and is being investigated in connection with other thefts throughout the county and in Lexington.

Charles Derek Mayo, 33, was arrested on Friday by the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office and charged with three felony counts of grand larceny of a motor vehicle – as well as contempt of court for failure to appear – the Sheriff’s Office announced in a press release on Saturday. The arrest was the result of a joint investigation with the Sheriff’s Office, Buena Vista Police Department and Lexington Police Department which required a “significant law enforcement presence” in several areas of the county including Brownsburg, Kerrs Creek, Lexington, Raphine, Rockbridge Baths and Walkers Creek.

“This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and we anticipate that additional charges may be forthcoming,” Rockbridge County Sheriff Tony McFaddin said in the release. “We are asking anyone who may have information or security camera footage of Mr. Mayo to please come forward. Community input is a vital part of our ability to resolve these cases thoroughly and effectively.”

The Sheriff’s Office thanked the Lexington and Buena Vista police departments “for their ongoing support collaboration and dedication throughout this investigation,” and expressed appreciation for the public’s cooperation and patience.

“The unified efforts of our local law enforcement agencies underscore our commitment to protecting our communities and holding those who commit crimes accountable,” the Sheriff’s Office said in the release.

Anyone with information or security camera footage that may be relevant to the investigation is urged to contact Chief Deputy Donald Schley at (540) 464-9232 or by email at deschely@rbsova. gov.

Mayo is being held without bail in Rockbridge County Regional Jail. A preliminary hearing on the grand larceny charges is scheduled for Aug. 4 in Rockbridge County General District Court.
