DR. MARTY DeREUS

Dr. Michael Lee “Marty” DeReus, longtime resident of Buena Vista, passed from this life on March 1, 2023.

Marty was born July 9, 1944, in Muskogee, Okla., the son of the late Colonel C.C. and Alma DeReus.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, BJ DeReus; his five children, Melanie (Lee) Higginbotham, REDACTED (Jenn) DeReus, Kirsten Dodd, Catherine (John) Buhler and Peter (Jenna) DeReus. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Dr. DeReus graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1966. After dental school at MCV, he served in Berlin, Germany, as an Army dentist, retiring as a major. In 1975 they moved to Buena Vista where he had a dental practice for 37 years. He was an active member of the community and served on City Council. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was heavily involved in Boy Scouts all his life. He loved woodworking and scuba diving. Underwater photography was one of his biggest passions. If there was a fish- he had a picture of it and a 40x40 print of it. He was not good at home repairs, but that did not stop him from trying. Dad’s testimony of his Savior was a strength to his family and those that knew him best.

Memorial services will be held on March 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Buena Vista Chapel located at 725 W 29th St, Buena Vista, VA 24416. N-G
