Wednesday, March 15 – The Parry McCluer High School girls tennis team earned a 5-4 win over county rival Rockbridge County in the season opener on Wednesday evening at the Lexington Country Club courts. For PM, it was the coaching debut of Alyssa Sewell.
The Fighting Blues, who had lost both matches against the Wildcats last year, beat RC for the first time in four years.
PM started the cool and windy evening by winning two of three doubles matches, and the Blues and Wildcats split their six singles matches.
The most competitive match of the day was at No. 1 singles, where RC senior Sophia Fafatas overcame a 7-4 deficit to defeat PM junior Addisen Roberts 9-7. Other Wildcats winning their singles matches were sophomore Julie Newhall at No. 5 and junior Katherine Lotts at No. 6. Blues winning their singles matches were junior Sadie Mays (No. 2) and sophomores Olive King (No. 3) and Macy Shafer (No. 4).
RC and PM are scheduled to meet again at the Southern Virginia University courts, the Blues’ home courts, on May 8.
The Wildcats, under the direction of second-year head coach Andrew Bellairs will return to action on Thursday when they play host to Staunton at 4:30 p.m. After spring break next week, the Blues will begin Pioneer District action at Narrows on Tuesday, March 28, at 5 p.m.
