RC Girls Soccer Falls To Fort In OT In Opener, 1-0

Thursday, March 16 – In a game ruled by defense, the Fort Defiance High School girls soccer team scored on a penalty kick late in the second overtime to defeat Rockbridge County 1-0 in the Wildcats’ season opener on Thursday night in Lexington.

In the nondistrict contest, RC junior goalkeeper Sophia Perlozzo made seven saves, but Fort (2-0) finally got past her when Emma Staley’s penalty kick went off the crossbar and just into the goal in the closing minutes.

Both teams had scoring chances throughout the game, with sophomore midfielder Madelyn Jones getting quality shots off for the Wildcats, but the goalkeepers and defenders repeatedly thwarted those opportunities. Fort goalkeeper Samantha Cooper made five saves.

The Wildcats are scheduled to travel to take on nondistrict rival Staunton on Friday, starting with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m.
