Friday, March 17 -- Staunton knocked off the Rockbridge County High School boys soccer team 7-0 in the Wildcats' home opener.
Ashton Barrett and Marc Geffrard scored two goals apiece as the Storm cruised in their first game of the season. John Lindberg made 12 saves in goal for RC, which fell to 0-2.
Barrett's brace came inside the first 10 minutes as Staunton took control early. The Wildcats put together some good spells of possession in the middle stages of the first half, and Lindberg made two spectacular saves to keep the margin at two.
But Geffrard's goal after 30 minutes made it 3-0 and seemingly put the match out of reach. Harri Wallace added a fourth for the Storm in the waning moments of the half.
Geffrard bagged his second just over 10 minutes into the second period, and Darwin De La O Mencia and Walker Darby would contribute late goals for Staunton.
For the match, the Storm outshot RC 32-4 and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Wildcats will play host to Fort Defiance on Tuesday, beginning with the junior varsity game at 5:30 p.m. RC fell 2-0 to the Indians in the season opener on the road on Thursday.
