Two special musical events are being presented at Grace Episcopal Church in Lexington this weekend.
On Friday, March 24, at 7 p.m., the Chamber Music Society of Lexington will present its premiere performance of “The Mystical Music of Messiaen.” Works include Le Banquet céleste, Quatuor pour la fin du Temps, and O sacrum convivium. The program will be directed by Martha Jones Burford and Mark Gallagher. A reception will follow.
The concert is a celebration of the work of French composer Olivier Messiaen, whose focus is on the eternal and redemption, and who thought of music composition in terms of colors. The concert will include choral music, organ music and Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time scored for clarinet, cello, piano and violin.
On Sunday, March 26, at 5 p.m., Choral Evensong will be presented celebrating the Feast of Charles Henry Brent, missioner bishop. Organist Dr. Ryan Tibbetts will be the guest musician. Also featured will be organist and choirmaster Burford, along with the choir and friends of the church. Works presented will be by Tibbetts, Herbert Howells and Sarah MacDonald. A reception will follow.
