FBLA Students Win Regional Awards

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) student organization at Rockbridge County High School recently took students to the regional conference at Longwood University. Five students won first place awards in their respective competitions.

F BLA is the nation’s largest business and technical student organization. The competition featured a variety of written tests and in-person academic events with over 150 students representing high schools from around the region.

Award winners from RCHS were sophomore David Aladzeme, first place, network infrastructure; sophomore Youssef Azab, first place, cybersecurity; junior Nicole Black, first place, business communications; junior Jackson Diette, fourth place, business calculations; junior Will Gibbs, first place, Excel spreadsheets; and sophomore Alexander Miller, first place, computer problem-solving. Those placing first in the regional competition qualified to attend the state conference March 31 through April 2, at the FBLA’s national headquarters in Reston.

On March 1, Azab and Gibbs, along with adviser Jennifer Balkey, represented the RCHS chapter at the regional conference at Longwood University, where they participated in workshops on leadership and professional development and were recognized for the chapter’s accomplishments in the competitions. Gibbs, the chapter president, noted, “I’m very proud of what our chapter put forward this year and am hoping for another great success at the state conference.”

The RCHS chapter of the FBLA also recently raised over $200 in a bowla- thon fundraiser for ASK Children’s Cancer Foundation. ASK is central Virginia’s largest and most comprehensive provider of support services for children with cancer and their families.

Advisers at RCHS for the organization are Jennifer Balkey and Mike Lenoir. Students interested in joining FBLA should contact one of the advisers.
