Alice Crispin Furgerson, 91, of Lexington died on March 15, 2023.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elwood and Madeline Crispin; her husband, John Arthur Furgerson; son John Crispin Furgerson; daughters Carol Apffel and Margaret Gregory; sister Kathy Reichenbach; and sonin- law Art Nowicki.
She is survived by daughter Kathleen Nowicki; daughter Tracy Graham (Donald); sons-in-law Keith Apffel and Andy Gregory; grandchildren Samantha Roache (Brendan), Kristyn Diggins (James), and Donnie Graham; brother Tom Crispin (Sue); and many nieces and nephews.
Born in Delaware, Alice grew up in Penns Grove, New Jersey, and Louisville, Kentucky. After graduating from the University of Delaware, Alice married Naval Academy graduate John and spent the first half of their marriage as a Navy wife and the next half as a preacher’s wife after John became an Episcopal priest.
She was an avid reader, prolific knitter, and life-long practitioner of the tradition of handwritten thank you notes. She spent many years as a church organist and choir director in parishes from California to Virginia. In addition, she worked as a docent and shop assistant at the Lee Chapel in Lexington.
Alice is well known for her extensive volunteerism, starting with the Navy Relief Society and the Red Cross. She was director of volunteers and president of the Hospital Auxiliary for Stonewall Jackson Hospital, president of the Rockbridge Area Hospice, member of the Stonewall Jackson Hospital board, volunteer at the Rockbridge Free Clinic, and a member of the local women’s club and the Episcopal Church Women.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on March 25 at Grace Episcopal Church, 123 W. Washington St., Lexington.
