Rockbridge Man Scratches His Way To Top Prize

A Fairfield man came up big on one of the scratcher tickets he bought last month.

According to a press release from the Virginia Lottery last week, Pete Louquet had purchased a number of scratcher tickets - some for himself and some to give away. When he scratched one of the tickets he’d bought for himself, it turned out to be a $100,000 winner.

“This was almost in the batch I was going to give as Christmas presents!” he later told Lottery officials.

Louquet won on a Crossword Connect 5X ticket that he bought at Virate Inc. (Exxon station), located at 218 Sterrett Road in Fairfield.

Crossword Connect features prizes ranging from $5 up to the $100,000 top prize. This is the second top prize claimed, which means four more remain unclaimed.

The chances of winning that top prize are 1 in 1,224,000. The chances of winning any prize in this game are 1 in 3.83.

Louquet, who runs The Herbery with his wife, Stephanie, said he intends to save his winnings towards retirement, and maybe have some work done on his house.

All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia. Lottery officials noted that Rockbridge County received nearly $1.5 million in lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year. In fiscal year 2022, the lottery raised more than $779 million for K-12 education, making up approximately 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.
