Wednesday, March 22 -- The Rockbridge County High School boys lacrosse team evened up its record on the new season with a 10-3 victory over Blacksburg in the Wildcats' home opener.
John Brooke totaled three goals and one assist to pace the Wildcats (1-1). Quincy Speers notched two goals and one assist for RC, while Alex Nye recorded one goal and a pair of helpers, and Jayden Layman scored twice.
Olliver Raboteau posted one goal and one assist for the Bruins (0-2), and Jacob Honaker tallied seven saves.
Michael Mullins got Blacksburg on the board first, scoring the only goal of the first quarter from a Raboteau feed at the 7:57 mark. Brooke pulled RC even with 8:25 to play in the second period, and Nye's extra-man goal with 4:10 left would give the 'Cats a 2-1 halftime edge.
The Wildcats' offense came to life after the break, including a 4-0 third quarter that put them in control. The second half also featured two man-up goals from Speers, as RC finished 3-of-6 on extra-man opportunities.
The 'Cats outshot the Bruins 44-14, and Andrew Kelly helped RC win 12-of-16 faceoffs in the game.
RC visits E.C. Glass on Thursday, beginning with the junior varsity contest at 5:30 p.m.
