Jackie Harris, Lexington’s general registrar and director of elections, is stepping down June 30 after about 23 months on the job. She said this week she is resigning because of health issues of her husband.

Harris, who has held the position since August of 2021, said she has enjoyed her time here and regrets that it has been so brief. She came to Lexington with a wealth of 30-years-plus experience in the administration of elections, having served previously as the general registrar in Fairfax and Albemarle counties, as a policy analyst for West Virginia’s secretary of state and as an international observer of elections overseas.

The final election she will oversee in Lexington may be on June 20, if any primaries are held to determine party nominees for the Nov. 7 elections. It is not known yet if there will be any contested races for those party nominations.

The city of Lexington is accepting job applications to fill the pending vacancy. Applications can be found online on the city’s website or picked up at City Hall during normal business hours. The city’s three-member electoral board hires and oversees the general registrar and director of elections.
