March 28, 1973

The new Holiday Inn opened just north of Lexington on U.S. 11. The 72-room facility included a restaurant, two large meeting rooms, a lounge and a swimming pool. - Josephine Brown and Carlton Clark joined Ray Painter as owners of National Wholesale on Jefferson Street. - Landon Temple, band director at Parry McCluer High School, was named Buena Vista Citizen of the Year. The Marching Blues were preparing for a trip to St. Petersburg, Fla., a trip three years in the making.

Buena Vista City Council and the Buena Vista Park and Recreation Facilities authority unanimously agreed to two complex financing arrangements clearing the way for construction of the firstever public golf course in the Rockbridge area. -A rally for the troops deployed in Iraq took place in Hopkins Green, organized by Barbara Mahaffey, whose son, Phillip Mahaffey, was fighting in the 82nd Airborne. - Virginia Military Institute’s Regimental Band and Pipes were named the best military band in the 2003 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City.
