‘Caring, Helpful’ Deputies Praised

‘Caring, Helpful’ Deputies Praised

Editor, The News-Gazette: Native Virginians, my wife, son and I moved to Rockbridge County 15 years ago.

I wanted to share our opinion that our county has caring and helpful sheriff deputies who are more than willing to assist the public.

My wife Sue was returning home after dark when her car lost power and stopped on the road near Effinger, adjacent to the Buffalo Creek. With a very narrow grass shoulder, she could only coast the car partially off of the road. After applying emergency flashers, fortunately a nice man stopped and gave her a ride to our home where we called for a tow.

Meanwhile Deputy Daniel Trout arrived at our home to inquire about the well being of the driver since he had spotted blood on the road right next to the abandoned car and wondered if the car had hit a deer and was the driver injured. He did acknowledge that the car did not appear to have any damage and had lit a couple of fl ares. T he b lood m ust have come from some prior road kill and it was a coincidence that the car stopped in that area.

Deputy Trout contacted Deputy Stephen Decoster as to the location of the car and informed him that the owner was immediately coming to leave a key for the tow truck driver.

I drove to the site where Deputy Decoster was waiving traffic around the stranded car whose flashers were growing dim. He then provided the necessary muscle to push the car onto the grass shoulder. This was not easy as the ground was soft.

Sue and I wanted to thank Deputy Trout and Deputy Decoster for their assistance and they are part of why we love living in Rockbridge County. DON WELLS JR. Collierstown
