Winning all three doubles matches, the Rockbridge County High School girls tennis team earned a 5-4 road win over Lord Botetourt last Wednesday.
The nondistrict win was first victory of the season for the Wildcats (1-2), who beat LB 5-4 last year also.
The teams played doubles first, and the Wildcats “got out to a great start,” said RC head coach Andrew Bellairs.
At No. 1 doubles, RC’s Sophia Fafatas and Corinna Allen eked out an 8-6 win over Reagan Meade and Meredith Claterbaugh. Wildcats Sydney Remington and Katherine Lotts beat Emily Sprouse and Kadence Overstreet 8-2 at No. 2, and RC’s Sara Topasna and Eleanor Goodhart beat Karis Hambrick and Raimee Sykes 8-5 at No. 3.
LB won four of six singles matches, but Fafatas earned an 8-6 victory at No. 1 over Meade, and Topasna captured an 8-3 victory at No. 2.
“Sophia grinded out her win in a close one,” said Bellairs. The RC coach said Topasna “did an awesome job” listening to his advice and getting “a ton of winners.”
Although two RC firstyear players, Lotts and Ethnie DeSpain, lost at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively, Bellairs was pleased they could get experience and that each won a few games.
The Wildcats were scheduled to begin Valley District action yesterday at Broadway and will play a nondistrict match at Stuarts Draft on Friday. After spring break next week, the Wildcats will return to district action when they play host to Harrisonburg at the Lexington Country Club courts on Tuesday, April 11. Both matches are scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
