James Blair Harris, 94, of Lexington passed peacefully in the presence of his children Thursday, March 30, 2023.
He was born Feb. 15, 1929, in Alleghany County, a son of the late Emmett Elmer Harris and Bessie Agnor Harris.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Maxine Sweet Harris; brothers George E. Harris and Charles “Lindy” Harris; and sister Lucille Miller.
James was a member of Lauderdale A.R. Presbyterian Church and retired after 42 years as a lab mechanic with the Virginia Military Institute chemistry department. He enjoyed walking, meeting people, and handing out mints.
Surviving are his children, James Brooke Harris (Joyce), Sidney “Ned” Harris (Diane) and Nina Faye Harris; one brother, Frank Harris; three grandchildren, Ashley Harris Mullinax (Gordon), Christopher Brandon Harris (Makailia Shipman) and Nicole Leann Harris; three great-grandchildren, Morgen Harris, Harbour Leech and Alyssa Harris; and special friends Robin and Janet Brown, Janie Dunlap and Cree Sherill. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, April 6, at Harrison Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Benjamin Dowling. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. before the service.
