April 3, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: We are concerned about how the tax rates being considered by the Board of Supervisors will impact the already strained budgets of county residents. A lot of residents are senior citizens, including ourselves, and are on fixed incomes. Our property assessment increased dramatically and we definitely appreciate the proposed rate reduction in the real estate tax rate. Even with this reduction, we are still facing an increase in what we will have to pay.
We are also worried about the proposed personal property tax rate. According to news reports and our research, it doesn’t appear that vehicle values have declined very much (if at all) and we feel that raising the rate to $4.25 is too much.
We ask the supervisors to please consider the financial burden that is being placed on county residents already. Food, gas, heating, medical, and other essential items have risen tremendously and stressed budgets to the maximum.
We know that the supervisors must try to make ends meet but so do the county residents. ALFRED and LINDA NEWELL Rockbridge County
