RC Girls Prevail, 5-4

The Rockbridge County High School girls tennis team earned a 5-4 home win over Broadway in the Valley District opener on Tuesday of last week at the Lexington Country Club courts.

The Rockbridge County High School girls tennis team earned a 5-4 home win over Broadway in the Valley District opener on Tuesday of last week at the Lexington Country Club courts.

With the victory, their second in a row after beating Lord Botetourt 5-4 the previous Wednesday, the Wildcats (2-2 overall, 1-0 district) showed their improvement. Last year, Broadway captured 8-0 and 9-0 victories over the Wildcats. The Gobblers ended the week at 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the district.

One of the highlights of the cool and windy evening was a win by RC sophomore Sydney Remington’s match at No. 5 singles. The match went to a tiebreak, in which she beat Broadway’s Rose Cox 7-3. Four of six RC girls won their singles matches.

The Wildcats lost at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, but Remington and RC junior Katherine Lotts clinched the team win by coming back from a 4-2 deficit to earn an 8-6 victory over Cox and Clara Denman at No. 3 doubles.

Praising his No. 3 duo, RC head coach Andrew Bellairs said, ”It was so awesome for Katherine and Sydney to make such a comeback and dominate at the end of their match!” said RC head coach Andrew Bellairs.

Reviewing the day, Bellairs said, “We performed great in singles, but then when we got the lead, I think we just got a little lazy in doubles.”

“As a team, we are doing a great job with our returns, but we aren’t being successful with our winners,” added Bellairs.

The Wildcats were scheduled to play at Stuarts Draft on Friday, but that match was postponed due to rain.

After spring break this week, the Wildcats will return to action with a Valley District home match against Harrisonburg on Tuesday before playing a nondistrict match at Lord Botetourt next Wednesday. Both matches are scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
