Churches Ready Holy Week Services

Community Sunrise Service

The Rockbridge Area Minister’s Alliance invites the public to the Community Easter Sunday Sunrise Worship Service on Sunday, April 9, at 7 a.m.

For the past few years, the Easter sunrise service had been cancelled because of the pandemic, but it’s back this year at First Baptist Church in downtown Lexington.

The Rev. Anita Mays Lucord, newly appointed pastor at Trinity United Methodist Church, will bring the message. Kelly Harris will provide the music.

Immediately following the worship service, a complimentary hot breakfast will be served in the downstairs fellowship hall.

For more information, call the Rev. McKinley A. Williams, chair of the alliance and pastor of First Baptist, at (540) 463-4854.

Oxford

Presbyterian

For the first time in its 265year history, Oxford Presbyterian Church will celebrate Easter with a sunrise service on its knoll facing Short Hill.

The service, with music, meditation and simple, continental- style breakfast afterwards in the church hall, will begin outside the front doors of 143 Oxford Lane at 6:30 a.m., as God has scheduled sunrise for 6:51 that day.

The church traces its history back to 1758 when a Presbyterian Society was formed, and two years later an octagonal log building was constructed on the knoll where the current church stands that could also serve as a fort in case of Native American hostilities. In 1811, a stone church was built to replace the log building. The current church was built after the Civil War.
