March is national Meals on Wheels Month and more than 100 area residents helped celebrate the occasion on March 20 in a big way.
The Southern Inn donated meals of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, roll and butter, and cookies to deliver to all Rockbridge area Meals on Wheels recipients. This treat was greeted with surprise and excitement by those who depend on Meals on Wheels for five meals each week. The Southern Inn also donated meals for the dedicated volunteers who deliver meals and the Maury River Senior Services staff who handle all the details of providing more than 2,000 meals each month to frail, homebound older neighbors.
Community champions” from the Buena Vista and Lexington fire departments and Buena Vista Police Department, along with Lexington Mayor Frank Friedman and Rockbridge County Administrator Spencer Suter, accompanied volunteers in delivering meals and learned of the need for food and human contact that Meals on Wheels fills.
“We’re so grateful for the generosity that allowed us to celebrate this special month,” said Hillary Bennington, Maury River Senior Services nutrition and programs coordinator.
“The need for volunteers to deliver meals one day a week is always there, and I encourage anyone who is interested in providing this muchneeded support to contact me at [email protected] or (540) 261-7474.”
