In the first weekend of the outdoor season, the Parry McCluer track and field teams had several athletes compete in two different meets.
Junior Kovyk Chandler raced on Friday at the Ram Country Invitational in Strasburg. Chandler, coming off winning the indoor state titles in the boys’ 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs, placed second of 30 runners in the 1600-meter run in 4.32.94.
At the Vince Bradford Invitational on Saturday in Lynchburg, PM freshman Kamilah Richardson placed fourth of 15 throwers in the shot put with a state-qualifying toss of 32 feet, 6.25 inches and finished 10th of 15 in the discus with a throw of 68 feet. “A very good start to the outdoor season there,” said PM throwing coach Danny Cole.
Freshman Kyra Lee placed seventh in the girls’ 800-meter run in 3:09.01 and finished fourth of eight runners in the 1600meter run in 6:21.96.
Competing for the PM boys at the meet were freshmen Logan Wheelock and Josh Cooper. Wheelock placed eighth of 17 runners in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:27.18, while Cooper finished ninth in 2:27.2. In the 1600-meter run,, Cooper came in eighth of 17 runners in 5:15.45, while Wheelock finished ninth in 5:15.96. In the 400-meter dash, freshman Caden Mason finished 21st in 1:11.46.
Griffin Harlow placed 11th of 21 throwers in the shot put with a toss of 37-1.5, about six feet farther than his best indoor throw, and Rayshan Richardson finished 12th of 22 throwers in the discus with a personal-record heave of 89-6.
The Blues will compete today at Covington and on Friday at the University of Lynchburg High School Twilight Meet.
