The Shenandoah Valley Post 1499 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) recently celebrated its 96th anniversary with a special event at the George C. Marshall Foundation. The commemorative program paid tribute to the rich history of the post and honored the selfless service of its members.
The event began with an introduction to the history of VFW Post 1499 by Post Commander Alexander Thymmons, who highlighted the post’s commitment to advocacy and support for veterans since its founding in 1927. John Wranek, director of development at the George C. Marshall Foundation, then provided a warm welcome and an introduction to the Foundation’s mission to preserve and promote the legacy of General George C. Marshall.
Attendees were captivated by the personal account of the battle for Bien Hoa Air Base in Vietnam, shared by retired Air Force Lt. Col. Robert “Hoppy” Noll Hopkins. His gripping narrative provided invaluable insight into the courage and dedication of our servicemen and women during a tumultuous time in American history, said a VFW spokeswoman.
The event also included a fundraising drive, with all donations collected during the evening donated to the VFW National Home of Virginia. Local Air Force ROTC cadets were also recognized during the event.
The celebration concluded with a reception, where guests mingled and shared their experiences in a fitting tribute to the 96th anniversary of VFW Post 1499.
