Doris Ruby Porterfield, 92, of Lexington died Monday, Jan. 9, 2023

Doris Ruby Porterfield, 92, of Lexington was born Sept. 7, 1930, in Washington, D.C., to the late James and Bernice Jones.

Doris graduated from the Lylburn Downing High School.  She became a Teacher’s Assistant soon after her graduation. She also worked at the Total Action Against Poverty Program in Glasgow. For more than 20 years Doris worked between the Super X Drugstore and the Walmart Super Store in Lexington until she retired.

Doris had many hobbies including sewing, arts, crafts, and planting flowers.  She was an excellent seamstress and on many occasions made clothing herself and others.

Doris loved spending time with her family and friends.

Doris accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at First Baptist Church of Lexington at an early age.  She worked on several committees and served in many capacities in the church. With her long tenure at First Baptist Church she was recognized as the oldest member of the church. She remained a faithful member of the church until her health failed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Nicholas and one son United States Army Sergeant Wilson M. Porterfield, Jr.

In the early hours of the morning on Monday, Jan. 9, 2023, the Lord whispered to Doris Ruby Porterfield that her work on earth was now finished.

Doris Ruby Porterfield leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Sharon Pennick of Roanoke, Berniece Williams (Henry) of Douglasville, Ga., Gayle Porterfield of Lexington and Charlene Porterfield of Bowie, Md.; one sister, Kim Chew of Clayton, N.C.; one daughter in law, Betty Porterfield; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Memorial services will be conducted on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Harrison Funeral Home by Pastor McKinley A. Williams.
