The Parry McCluer High School girls tennis team improved to 2-0 by earning a 6-3 road win over Alleghany on Tuesday of last week.
The nondistrict match was the first competition for the Fighting Blues since their 5-4 road victory over Rockbridge County in the season opener on March 15. The Blues were scheduled to travel to take on Pioneer District rival Narrows on March 28, but that match was rescheduled for May 4.
The Blues won six of seven matches that were played, while Alleghany (0-4) won two matches by forfeit because PM was missing Marley Convers.
First-year PM head coach Alyssa Sewell said she was especially pleased with sophomores Olive King and Macy Shafer. Both players won their singles matches 8-1 and teamed up at No. 2 doubles to win 8-2 over Alleghany’s Rachel and Emma Nicely. “Macy and Olive played very steady and were able to keep their composure through the ups and downs, leading them to huge victories in both doubles and singles,” said Sewell.
Sewell also praised PM juniors Addisen Roberts and Sadie Mays. Roberts battled to an 8-5 win over Olivia Groves at No. 1 singles, Mays earned an 8-2 victory over Jayden Ryan at No. 2 doubles, and the duo teamed up for an 8-3 win over Groves and Ryan at No. 1 doubles.
“Addisen and Sadie were able to overcome some mental blocks and pulled through with the wins in both singles and doubles,” said Sewell.
The Blues were scheduled to play at Nelson County yesterday and will start Pioneer District action with a home match against Bath County, the team PM beat for the Pioneer District title last year, on Thursday at the Southern Virginia University courts. PM will take on Narrows at the SVU courts on Thursday, April 20. Both matches are scheduled for 5 p.m.
