Carla Joy DeSmidt of Vesuvius died Jan. 11

 

Carla Joy DeSmidt of Vesuvius, born July 1, 1945, died at her home on Jan. 11, 2023.  She was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wis. 

She wed in November 1967 to her high school sweetheart. Tom and Carla were married 55 years. Most of her adult life was spent in Virginia.

Carla earned a master’s degree in social work from VCU.  She spent a great part of her career as a director for Meals on Wheels.  Her hobbies included gardening, traveling around the world, reading, and spending time with her family and friends.  She loved cats.

For over a decade, she fought a long battle with cancer.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas DeSmidt of Vesuvius; and her son, Hans DeSmidt of Knoxville, Tenn. 

She will be greatly missed by many longtime friends and family members.

At her request, in her final wishes, there will be no memorial service or funeral by her immediate family.  She wished to be remembered and acknowledged as a hardworking, loving mother and wife, loyal, unselfish friend, and esteemed, respected colleague.

Arrangements are being handled by Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
