PM Girls Overcome Bath In District Tennis Opener, 5-4

Thursday, April 13 – The Parry McCluer High School girls tennis team battled to a 5-4 home win over Bath County in the Pioneer District opener to improve to 4-0 on Thursday evening at the Southern Virginia University courts in Buena Vista.

It was the first loss of the season for Bath (4-1 overall, 0-1 district), which had lost to the Fighting Blues in the Pioneer District finals last year.

The Fighting Blues started Thursday’s action by winning both of their doubles matches, but they had to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match because they were short a player. PM also had to forfeit at No. 6 singles, so the score was 2-2 going into singles.

In addition to the win by forfeit, the Chargers won two singles matches, but PM’s Macy Shafer cruised to an 8-1 win over Jess Ingram at No. 4 singles, and teammate Sadie Mays earned an 8-4 victory over Abbey Phillips at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, PM’s Olive King gained a large lead before BC’s Brooke Hess battled back, but King held on for an 8-6 win to clinch the match.

The Blues were coming off a 6-3 road win over Nelson County on Tuesday.

PM will continue district action at home Narrows next Thursday at 5 p.m. at the SVU courts.
