Monday, April 17 -- The Rockbridge County High School girls lacrosse team ended a long layoff from competition with a resounding 18-1 win over previously unbeaten Monticello in Lexington.
Nala Shearer totaled seven points on four goals and three assists to lead the way for the Wildcats (2-1), who were taking the field for their first game since a thrilling 9-8 overtime defeat to Western Albemarle on March 29.
Josie Caldwell added three goals and one assist for RC, and Lola Mulitalo also scored three goals. Maddie Dahl finished with two goals and two assists, Lily Youngman tallied two goals and one helper, McKenzie Hines notched two goals, and Halina Homiak registered one goal and three assists.
Hines also collected seven draw controls, surpassing 100 for her career in the process. For the game, RC held a 14-5 edge on the draw circle and outshot the Mustangs 25-8.
The Wildcats didn't show any signs of rust from a 19-day gap between regular-season action, sprinting out to a 9-0 advantage inside the opening nine minutes and leading 13-0 by halftime.
Kendall Gibson sccored the lone goal for the Mustangs (4-1) on a free-position shot early in the second half, while Campbell Murray made five saves in goal on the night.
The RC defense also forced 18 Mustang turnovers, including two caused turnovers apiece for Dahl, Mulitalo and Jaden McCoy. Rachel Hines recorded four saves for the Wildcats.
RC will travel to Jefferson Forest on Thursday, starting with the junior varsity game at 5:30 p.m.
