RC’s Zollman Throws No-Hitter

The Rockbridge County High School softball team returned from spring break in strong form, earning a pair of road wins, a 10-0 shutout of Staunton on Monday of last week and an 11-4 triumph in the Valley District opener at Harrisonburg the following day.

The Rockbridge County High School softball team returned from spring break in strong form, earning a pair of road wins, a 10-0 shutout of Staunton on Monday of last week and an 11-4 triumph in the Valley District opener at Harrisonburg the following day.

With the win over Staunton, the Wildcats completed a sweep of the regularseason series. When the two teams met on March 17 at RC, RC won 19-0 in five innings.

In the rematch, junior Marla Zollman threw a no-hitter for the Wildcats, striking out 10 and allowing two walks.

The first three innings were scoreless, but the Wildcats scored six runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth to end the game early due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The Wildcats racked up nine hits against two Staunton pitchers. Leading RC with two hits each were Parker Dameron, Kaydence Wilson and Page Wright. Dameron led the Wildcats with four RBIs, while Wilson and Wright each had two RBIs.

Staunton committed two errors, while RC had one. With the loss, Staunton fell to 2-5.

RC 11, HHS 4

The Wildcats earned a 11-4 road win over Harrisonburg on Tuesday of last week to improve to 3-5, while Harrisonburg fell to 3-4.

Zollman pitched a complete game, again striking out 10 while allowing nine hits, three walks and four earned runs.

The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the second and added a run in the fourth before erupting for six runs in the sixth. The Blue Streaks scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Wildcats’ lead to 9-4, but RC scored the final two runs of the game in the seventh.

RC racked up 11 hits against two Harrisonburg pitchers. Leading the Wildcats with two hits each were Zollman, Wilson, Lilly Purcell and Chasity Southers. Purcell and Southers led RC with three RBIs each, while Zollman and Dameron each had one RBI.

The Wildcats were scheduled to play host to Spotswood yesterday and will continue district action at Turner Ashby on Friday at 5:30 p.m. before playing host to district rival Broadway on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
