The Rev. Bill Klein led the 11 a.m. worship service at the Collierstown Presbyterian Church on April 16. During the service, nine children received the sacrament of baptism. Those children and their parents were Deacon Dunlap Gentry, son of Jake and Ann Stuart Gentry; Fowler Cole Goodbar and Bowen Lee Goodbar, sons of Bradley and Morgan Goodbar; Thomas Allen Goodbar, son of Carter and Georgia Goodbar; and Logan Asher Goodbar, son of Kirk and Brooke Goodbar.
Also baptized were Ella Kate Harris, daughter of Tommy and Kathryn Harris; Paislee Jaimes Hicks, daughter of Travis and Brooke Hicks; Deborah Grace McCormick, daughter of David and Martha McCormick; and Zola Ann Richardson, daughter of Justis and Hayden Richardson.
Six adults joined the church as well. Becoming members by the transfer of letter were Ann Stuart Irvine Gentry and Jack Dunlap Gentry III. Becoming church members by the profession of faith were Candace Brooke H. Goodbar and William Kirk Goodbar, Georgia Logan Goodbar, Kathryn Hartless Harris and Justis James Richardson.
The worship service also included the ordination of David McCormick as elder in the class of 2024.
Following the worship hour a reception and time of fellowship provided by the Presbyterian Women was held in the fellowship hall.
The Collierstown Presbyterian Women will hold their quarterly meeting on Thursday, April 20, at 6:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall. The women’s ministry plans for the spring and summer months will be discussed.
Members of the Collierstown United Methodist Church are reminded of the church cleanup day to be held on Saturday, April 29. Breakfast prepared by the men of the church will begin the day at 8 a.m. On Sunday, April 30, a joint service of the Collierstown United Methodist Charge will be held at the Collierstown church at 11 a.m. The Announcers will bring the message in song followed by a covered-dish luncheon.
The Effinger Ruritan Club will hold its monthly dinner meeting at the Palmer Community Center on Thursday, April 20, at 6 p.m. Those interested in club membership and community service are invited to attend the meeting to learn more.
On Thursday, April 27, at 5:30 p.m. the public is invited to the Anderson Coliseum Mezzanine of the Virginia Horse Center for the program with Dr. Kip Armstrong, son of Collierstown native and Newbery Award winning author William Howard Armstrong, speaking about his father’s work and the inspiration for Armstrong’s classic young adult novel, “Sounder,” and its sequel, “Sour Land.”
Dr. Armstrong will focus on and pay homage to Charlie Jones, a Rockbridge educator of color, whose life and work provided the basis for both novels.
