Friday, April 21 -- Turner Ashby used a late goal to claim a 1-0 victory over Rockbridge County in a Valley District high school girls soccer match in Lexington.
Amelia Hughes followed up her own rebound for the match-winner in the 73rd minute to lift the Knights (4-5-1, 2-1-0 Valley) to the victory.
Sophia Perlozzo recorded nine saves for the Wildcats (3-7-0, 0-3-0), including a great stop on Hughes' initial shot that was set up by Reese Secord's diagonal through ball.
Perlozzo was kept busy all night, as TA outshot RC 32-0. But the Wildcats' defensive organization prevented the Knights from creating more than a handful of quality scoring chances. Still, the Wildcats' junior goalkeeper made seven saves after halftime, along with several interceptions of TA crosses and other key interventions inside the 18-yard box.
Though the Wildcats couldn't generate any shot attempts, they had a few forays forward into the attacking third. RC's best chance of the night came in the 56th minute, when Madelyn Jones made a brilliant long run from the opposite side of midfield, cutting out to the right wing and racing into the penalty area -- only to have her cross just miss a connection with Sophie Vaught.
A long, last-ditch RC free kick from the left touchline was controlled by TA goalkeeper Katelyn Lough in the 80th minute as the Knights held on for the narrow road victory.
The Wildcats hit the road to face Broadway on Tuesday, beginning with the junior varsity match at 5:30 p.m.
