The Rockbridge County High School softball team suffered a pair of Valley District losses last week, falling at home 6-1 against Spotswood last Tuesday before losing 11-1 on the road to undefeated Turner Ashby on Friday.
Against Spotswood, the Wildcats (4-7 overall, 1-3 district) fell behind 5-0 in the first inning and never recovered. RC’s lone run came in the third inning, with Lilly Purcell bringing home Kelsie Caldwell.
The Trailblazers, who ended the week at 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the district, added their final run in the sixth inning.
Taelor Ware had two hits and two RBIs for Spotswood, and she also pitched the first four innings, striking out two and allowing six hits, two walks and one earned run. In three innings of relief, Cici Rodriguez struck out one and surrendered no hits, no walks and no runs. Aspen Jones had two hits and an RBI for Spotswood, and Maycee Dean had a pair of hits.
Purcell led RC with two hits. Recording one hit each for the Wildcats were Caldwell, Parker Dameron, Kaydence Wilson and Bella Dorey.
Marla Zollman started on the mound for the Wildcats, but was replaced just one out into the game after the Blazers scored five runs. Freshman Sadie Moore pitched for the Wildcats for the rest of the game, striking out three and surrendering five hits, one walk and one earned run.
The Wildcats committed four errors, while Spotswood had one.
On Friday, Turner Ashby cruised to an 11-1 win to improve to 14-0 overall and 3-0 in the district. Dameron hit a solo home run for the Wildcats.
RC was scheduled to play host to Broadway yesterday and will have a nondistrict home game against James River today, Wednesday, before playing host to district rival Harrisonburg on Friday. On Monday, the Wildcats will attempt to sweep the season series against local rival Parry McCluer. When the teams met on April 14 at PM, RC won 13-8 in nine innings. All games are scheduled for 5 p.m.
