PM Girls Tennis 6-0

PM Girls Tennis 6-0

With another 5-4 win over a Pioneer District rival, the Parry Mc-Cluer High School girls tennis team improved to 6-0 last week, while the Rockbridge County girls dropped three matches to fall to 2-7.

The Fighting Blues earned a 6-3 road win over Prince Edward County on Tuesday of last week before overcoming district rival Narrows 5-4 on Thursday at the Southern Virginia University courts. The previous Thursday, the Blues had outlasted district rival Bath County 5-4 at SVU. PM improved to 2-0 in the district.

Against Narrows, PM head coach Alyssa Sewell was especially proud of her doubles teams. Addisen Roberts and Sadie Mays teamed up at No. 1 doubles to earn an 8-3 win, and Olive King and Macy Shafer battled to a 9-7 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Sewell said her top two doubles teams “went out strong and played the best matches I’ve seen this season.”

At No. 3 doubles, Piera Conner joined forces with freshman Peyton Chittum, who just joined the team, and lost 8-0.

PM’s singles winners were Roberts, Mays and King at the top three spots.

The Wildcats knew they were in for a challenge against the dominant teams in the district, and they suffered 9-0 losses at Spotswood on Tuesday of last week and at home against Turner Ashby on Friday. RC fell to 1-3 in the district, while Spotswood ended the week at 11-0 overall and 4-0 at the district.

RC head coach Andrew Bellairs said he felt the Wildcats should have won at Staunton, but the Storm prevailed 6-3, completing a sweep of the regular-season series. When the two teams met in Lexington on March 16, Staunton won 7-2.

Bellairs was proud of his players for showing improvement against TA. “I thought, despite the scores, we really finally got a little more control of our play versus TA,” he said.

The Wildcats were scheduled to have three road matches this week, with a rematch at TA on Monday before a contest at Broadway on Tuesday. They’ll continue district action at Harrisonburg on Thursday before playing host to Stuarts Draft in nondistrict action on Tuesday at the Lexington Country Club courts.

The Blues will return to action next week with a nondistrict contest against Nelson County on Monday at 5 p.m.
