Local photographer Patrick Hinely will be the guest artist for the month of May at Nelson Art Gallery.
He calls his show “Film Relics, 1971 – 2011” and it promises to be thought-provoking and stimulating, said a Gallery spokesperson. The photos echo his wide interests and keen eye. Hinely has done a lot of work in diverse contexts – and places - with musicians, as well as documenting unusual landscapes in his birth state of Florida.
Many will be familiar with his work as Washington and Lee University’s university photographer for nearly 40 years, retiring in 2018. Lexington residents will also have seen his work in the Rockbridge Advocate since 1992. From 2003 until 2006 he taught in the W&L Art Department. He also served as staff photographer for Spoleto Festival USA during its first seven years.
Hinely’s work has been published in or on more than 300 LPs and/or CDs, and he has written liner notes, reviews and other pieces for jazz publications both here and abroad. Hinely has called himself a “Hunter Gatherer of Souvenirs, Places and People” - or more succinctly, “Life captured in the process of being lived.”
The opening reception will be Friday, May 5, from 5 to 7 p.m.
“Hay Bales, Rockbridge County, 2011” will be one of the photographs in Patrick Hinely’s exhibit at Nelson Gallery during May.
