On Sunday, April 30, a joint service of the Collierstown United Methodist Charge will be held at the Collierstown church at 11 a.m. The Announcers will bring the message in song followed by a covered-dish luncheon.
Tomorrow, Thursday, April 27, at 5:30 p.m. the public is invited to the Anderson Coliseum Mezzanine of the Virginia Horse Center for the program with Dr. Kip Armstrong, son of Collierstown native and Newbery Award winning author William Howard Armstrong, speaking about his father’s work and the inspiration for Armstrong’s classic young adult novel, “Sounder,” and its sequel, “Sour Land.”
Dr. Armstrong will focus on and pay homage to Charlie Jones, a Rockbridge educator of color, whose life and work provided the basis for both novels. The evening will also include a preview of 10 original paintings by James Barkley that became the illustrations for “Sounder.” For more information on the event or the Sounder Circle project, send email to Susan Virginia Mead, [email protected], or call (540) 267-5678.
The churches in the Buffalo and Collierstown communities will be hosting a joint vacation Bible school at the Palmer Community Center the week of June 4-9. More information on the theme and classes being offered will be published in this column in the coming weeks.
